Monday Musings – One Step, A Thousand Miles

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

Last week, I reflected on the importance of starting where you stand, beyond the weight of resolutions and grand declarations. This week, I want to linger on Lao Tzu’s timeless reminder: every great journey begins not with a perfect plan, but with a single, imperfect step.

We often imagine progress as a sweeping transformation — the new website launched, the book published, the coaching practice thriving. But the truth is quieter. Progress happens with the small, steady steps we take when no one is watching.

The Myth of the Leap

In coaching, I see it often: people waiting for the “big leap.” They want the perfect moment, the flawless strategy, the guaranteed outcome. But the leap is a myth. What moves us forward is the step.

One blog post written.

One email sent.

One conversation started.

One idea tested.

Each step may feel small, but together they create momentum.

And momentum is what carries us across the thousand miles.

Steps as Ritual

For me, steps are not just actions; they are rituals. A Monday reflection, a weekly goal, a monthly theme — these are steps that anchor me in rhythm. They remind me that progress is not about rushing, but about returning, again and again, to the path.

As a new grandfather, I feel this truth deeply. Lenka’s journey will be made of steps: her first smile, her first word, her first walk. Each step will be celebrated, not because it completes the journey, but because it begins it.

Our creative and professional lives are no different. The steps matter because they are beginnings, each one a lantern lighting the way forward.

Confidence in the Small

Lao Tzu’s wisdom also reminds us that confidence is not built in leaps, but in steps. Each time we act, we prove to ourselves that movement is possible. Each time we show up, we strengthen trust in our own capacity.

This is why setting small, achievable goals matters. A monthly theme broken into weekly tasks. A daily practice that feels doable. These steps build confidence, and confidence builds trust — both with ourselves and with those we serve.

The Thousand Miles Ahead

The thousand miles can feel daunting. The distance between where we are and where we want to be seems vast. Yet, people don't walk a thousand miles in a single day. They advance in steps.

We as coaches all face this truth. The journey is long, but the step is immediate. The step is available. The step is sufficient.

Take The Step

So as you begin this week, don’t wait for the leap.

Take the step.

Write the post. Share the idea. Reach out to the client. Begin the ritual.

The journey of a thousand miles is not about speed or perfection. It is about presence, rhythm, and trust.

And remember: every step counts.
