It’s the New Year, and we all know what that means: resolutions everywhere. Lists of promises, ambitious targets, and declarations of change. But let me ask you honestly — are you like me, someone who doesn’t quite believe in those kinds of resolutions?
I’ve always felt that resolutions, while well‑intentioned, often carry hidden traps. They sound inspiring, but they can weigh us down before we even begin. And yet, the desire behind them — the longing to grow, to change, to aim upward — is deeply human. So how do we honor that desire without falling into the resolution trap?
Why Wait?
It’s a good thing to want to accomplish a worthwhile goal. But why wait until January 1st to begin? If you feel the spark to start or change something, the best time is now — not someday, not “after the holidays,” not “when the timing is perfect.”
Growth begins where you stand. The calendar doesn’t give you permission; your values do. When you recognize what matters most, you can begin today, even with the smallest step.
The Trap of Unrealistic Goals
Resolutions often fail because they don’t reflect reality. When goals ignore your actual ability, resources, or commitment, they become traps. You set yourself up for failure before you’ve even begun. And with that failure come procrastination, pressure, and shame.
Think of the person who declares they’ll run a marathon but hasn’t jogged in years. Or the entrepreneur who promises to triple their income without a plan. These resolutions are not lanterns; they are burdens.
Coaching invites a different rhythm: goals that are honest, aligned with values, and scaled to your life.
Healthy Approaches
The secret isn’t in abandoning goals altogether, but in approaching them healthily.
- Choose aims that resonate with your values. When your goal reflects what matters most, it becomes sustainable.
- Break them into steps that feel doable. A thousand‑mile journey begins with one lantern lit.
- Celebrate progress, not just completion. Progress itself is valuable. Recognizing that is powerful.
This is where coaching shines: helping people wrestle with values, clarity aims, and walk their pathway with courage.
Progress as Gift
Too often, we dismiss progress because it feels small. But every step forward is a gift. Writing 250 words toward a novel, reaching out to one new client, or practicing one act of service — these are not failures because they aren’t “finished.” They are victories because they move you closer to alignment.
Resolutions tend to measure success only at the finish line. Coaching teaches us to honor the journey itself.
A Lantern for 2026
So here’s the lantern I offer today: don’t wait for the calendar to give you permission. Begin where you are. Aim upward, but walk steadily. Let your values guide you, and let progress itself be the gift.
This year, instead of resolutions that fade, choose rhythms that endure. Choose values that anchor you. Choose steps that light the path, one lantern at a time.
Happy New Year, friends of the Valley. May 2026 be a year not of pressure and procrastination, but of steady growth.
May your aims reflect your values, your progress bring joy, and your lanterns keep glowing along the way.
Happy New Year!
